Insulin Guru is a simple, easy-to-use tool designed to help people with diabetes estimate their mealtime and correction insulin doses. It provides a clear and structured way to calculate insulin needs based on carbohydrate intake and blood glucose levels.
This tool is designed for individuals who manage their insulin levels, whether for themselves, a family member, or a caregiver. It is particularly helpful for those using rapid-acting insulin and wanting a quick way to determine their required dose.
Insulin Guru calculates two different types of insulin requirements:
This is determined using your Insulin-to-Carbohydrate Ratio (ICR), which tells you how many grams of carbohydrates one unit of insulin will cover. The formula is:
Insulin for Carbs = (Total Carbs Eaten) / (Carb Ratio)
The result is then rounded to the nearest 0.5 unit.
If your blood glucose is above your target level, extra insulin may be needed to bring it down. This is calculated using the Correction Factor (Sensitivity Factor), which tells you how much one unit of insulin lowers your blood sugar. The formula is:
Insulin for Correction = (Current Blood Glucose - Target Glucose) / Correction Ratio
The result is rounded down to the nearest 0.5 unit to ensure there's no accidental over-correction. No correction is applied if blood glucose is at or below the target.
Finally, these two values are added together to give the total insulin dose.
